The conference attracted 4,000 visitors, many VIPs, 33 other heads of state including the President of the United States.  Hosting this event was a great honor for Trinidad, but also a big security concern that would have challenged many bigger and wealthier nations. Failure, or even perception of risk, was not an option.

Mer Systems was chosen due to its vast experience in diverse and challenging safety critical environments as well as an extensive record of numerous projects, such as the 2004 Greek Olympics and various security projects in the State of Israel.

This contract required a fully operational and trialed turn key system to be delivered in 2 months.

The Solution 

MER surveyed, designed, installed and maintained about 400 state-of-the-art surveillance cameras and several Command and Control centers. The project included delivery and installation of 94 5-8 Mega pixel cameras, to provide high-resolution coverage of areas with a high security risk. The camera system made extensive use of analytical capabilities such as facial recognition, number plate and pattern recognition, to enable rapid detection of potential or emerging threats. To provide the necessary level of redundancy all the cameras were equipped with uninterruptible power sources and were installed in tamper proof housings whose locations were specifically and precisely surveyed to provide the best coverage.

The cameras were networked and controlled using a 10 Gbps fiber optic backbone with 1Gbps loops. This enabled all the cameras to be controlled and monitored from 2 Command and Control Centers. Camera installation had to be accomplished in a very short time (6 weeks). The entire system was brought on line, with all training requirements fulfilled, to enable the required level of operation and co-operation with all the national and visiting security services involved. 

The Result

The fast deployment, the adequate design, the staff training and overall effective operation of the surveillance system were key factors in achieving the project objectives. Due to MER unmatched expertise the contract was executed within the time frame and the allocated budget.
